Summer VFR #1: Suite Scarlett

(*VFR: Very Fun Read)

Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson

The premise: a family living in a hotel in NYC. The girl on the cover is exactly right, by the way.

Reading this book was like when you go to a high school play knowing you'll probably have a good time but hoping you'll find bits of brilliance scattered throughout, and leaving feeling that it was indeed some of the best entertainment you've had in awhile. I loved the peek into growing up in NYC, and of course my favorite parts were anything to do with theater rehearsals and such. The relationships between Scarlett and her siblings were consistently fascinating and believable. And the HUMOR! I must mention that. Suite Scarlett was written in the same retro dry-funny voice (I just made up that term) as the author's blog. I was giggling up a storm. And I have to say, it doesn't get much better than Hamlet on unicycles.

If you've read the book, you must watch this music video. Maureen Johnson, the author, says, "I was amazed to find that it features quite an accurate representation of Scarlett and Spencer, as they exist in my mind. (A grown Scarlett, appearing in many disguises, but the Spencer is pretty much dead on.) And it’s not just what they look like . . . it’s the whole video, the activities. This is just the kind of part I could see him getting cast in." She's right. THIS is Spencer. (He's Scarlett's brother, for those who don't know.) The wonderful, lovable Spencer.

(I will note that the book contains some language/mild innuendos.)

She's just right? Really? I was dreadfully annoyed at her because she looks about twenty-two...just like the all-too common abomination of actors in their late twenties playing high schoolers. Blech. But I digress.

Sounds great! I just finished 13 Little Blue Envelopes. Have you read that one? How do the two compare?

Em - I haven't read that one yet. I really want to, though. Besides this, I've only read Devilish, which I liked.
