Yellowbelly and Plum

by Nathan Hale

Recently, my little cousins came to visit. Whenever they're around, I pull out any picture books I may have accumulated from various publishers/authors, and read them to the kids to get an official seal of approval (or not, as the case may be). I had varying degrees of success, but the book that won out as the clear champion favorite was Yellowbelly and Plum Go to School. Both Kenny (6) and Reese (2) were not only engrossed in the story straight from the beginning, but they stayed so during the entire book (not an easy feat for these kiddos, trust me). The illustrations are really lovely; all bright colors and lots of fun to look at. The boys had fun trying to spot Plum on each page. The funny-looking animals made them laugh to look at.

Later in the week, Kenny announced that he'd "made a book." Here it is, exactly as he narrated it to me....

"The story of Plum,
author made by Kenny"
"That's Plum's whole body."
"Plum is shrinking."
"And then only his feet."

"And then he's in the graveyard dead."
"The end."

I'm so proud of him. He's already got a morbid side. I hope he keeps writing....

Some kids are just plain awesome.
Wonder if they'd frolick in a graveyard with you?

I love the illustrations that go with the story. Especially the one in the graveyard.

HAH! I think it's more realistic than morbid -- but either way, it's awesome that he can go to A-Z with writing a little book.

Oh! I LOVE Nathan Hale! And he is about as sweet and funny as his books. His illustrations really are amazing. Did you know he was the one who did all of the illustrations for Shannon Hale's graphic novel, Rapunzel's Revenge? Maybe you could read that to them. It's fantastic (and I love his little book. The ending is just the perfect twist. You've got the makings of a real author on your hands there) :)

Heather - yes! I love Rapunzel's Revenge! I think the kids may be a little young for that yet, but I definitely want to share it with them someday. :)

Hi Erin, Thank you so much for your review of YB and P! This sad story about Plum is totally fantastic and funny (and sad) I've been showing it to everyone.

I am the RAPUNZEL illustrator, and you'll be happy to know that the sequel to RAPUNZEL, CALAMITY JACK is now finished and should be out this coming winter.

Thanks again!
